ALL ABOUT EXERCISE (VYAYAMA) ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
What is exercise (Vyayama)?
Activities that bring about tiredness to the body are called Vyayama (Exercise).
Why should you exercise daily?
1. Exercises enhance the strength of the body,
2. Improves the digestive fire,
3. Improves overall body nourishment, la
stre & body musculature,
4. Removes laziness,
5. Bring about tolerance towards tiredness, thirst, hot or cold weather,
6. Cure Obesity
7. Improve body stability
8. Brings lightness on the body
9. Keeps diseases at bay
How much should you exercise?
• Sweating, increased respiration rate, lightness in the body & increased heart rates are the features of proper exercise.
• Maximum exercise can be done in the cold season until one’s half’s strength. This is indicated by sweating the on forehead, palms & thighs.
• If we over-indulge in exercise beyond our body’s capacity without taking a nutritious diet, it can lead to severe Vata aggravation, tissue loss & poor Agni (digestive fire).
• Exercise should be part of our daily routine but moderation is the key.
Who should avoid heavy exercise?
1. People who suffer from diseases of Vata and pitta, so for them light exercise and pranayama are better.
2. Children are always running & playing so for them that exercise is enough, does not need extra workout.
3. For aged (elderly people), no heavy exercise
Walks, 20 min cardio, yoga, and pranayama suit them better.
4. People with indigestion problems won’t be able to exercise. For them, “Vajrasana”, walks and “Pranayama” are suggested. Once the food is digested, they can exercise..
